Nlanhla Zondi becomes Capitec’s 20 millionth client and the passionate foodie enjoys a specially created food tour, courtesy of Capitec, to mark the occasion.
Capitec recently acquired their 20 millionth client and to celebrate reaching this landmark number for the bank, the team wanted to get to know their new sign-up and gift him with a special experience to give thanks for joining the proud, and ever-growing, Capitec family.
The 20 millionth client is Nhlanhla Zondi, a hard working father of 2 from Soweto, with a kota joint where he sells traditional South African cuisine on weekends. Every day that the full-time carpenter and foodie opens his family kota business to local customers – is a celebration of his own father’s legacy – a man who taught his son his trade, then opened this kota enterprise to keep him and his sister busy on weekends.
Inspired by Nhlanhla’s character and passion to learn, grow and live better, Capitec set about pulling together a day to share with his family that would spoil, delight and add lasting value to his life.
After spending the morning getting to know the person behind the 20 millionth account and exploring his motivation to switch to Capitec, as if timed perfectly to prove the decision to join the bank was a good one, a stretch limo arrived. Becoming Capitec’s 20 millionth client was a big celebration and it was about to kick-off in style.
Since this entrepreneur’s goal is to follow in his father’s footsteps in being the best at what he does, Capitec had arranged for chef Sizwe Cebekhulu to host the family at his academy where they enjoyed a private pizza making class with a traditional African twist by the top chef and operations manager of the culinary school. The family got the full chef makeover, enjoyed expert guidance and finally got to tuck in and devour their efforts.
This was turning out to be everything which Mr Zondi had imagined when he got the call from Capitec, telling him what they had planned to toast his being their 20 millionth client. But they weren’t done yet! For a most special dessert, the Zondi family had been invited to join a chef who cooked for the most famous son of South African soil. Their next and final stop was Eziko Restaurant in the Shanty Town Lifestyle centre owned By Chef Andile Somdaka. In this space where food and culture collide, Chef Andile shared stories and memorabilia of his time in food service with Nelson Mandela.
While digesting the importance of our history, culture and food, the group were served the proudly South African desert of Malva pudding and custard, to top off a remarkable day – for a remarkable man – and a remarkable moment.
A restless entrepreneur, Nhlanhla’s next plan is to teach his kids agriculture, so that they can also grow their own food. With this ambition and drive, and Capitec on his side, anything is possible.
