Local dancer, creative director and choreographer, Rudi Smit, shines on an international stage working for some of the world’s biggest brands, while keeping it real here at home getting down with Capitec.
SAMA winner, Rudi Smit, has been moving and shaking the business model of music video and commercial dance choreography – for years. From a base in South Africa, he has choreographed commercials for the world’s biggest sports brands, car, fashion, food and technology companies; taught or performed in 25 countries and built a powerhouse dance company right here at home. He is the first South African to choreograph K-pop music videos and also judges dance competitions on 4 continents around the world.
Perhaps, what is most impressive, is the fact that he does it all from his home base in the Western Cape and continues to share his skills and knowledge with professional dancers and creatives, brands and private students. After being recently brought in to host a dance class at a Capitec marketing conference, another group of keen Capitec employees could not resist the opportunity to have a go themselves and booked a private class with the prolific dance personality, teacher and choreographer. The group of dance enthusiasts from Capitec, including Khanyisa Mpofana, Lance Wantza, Bonita Rittmann, Nazlee Haupt and Thabitha Hleli, couldn’t wait and what fun it was! They visibly enjoyed the class . So much so, we can safely assume, it won’t be their last.
The Capitec crew proved they can bust a few moves of their own and were only too happy to show them off in paying for their awesome dance class with Rudi. They quickly got the payment sorted using a couple of the variety of digital payment methods available to all Capitec clients and account holders through the Capitec app. Going cashless has never been this simple – and every hour spent developing this app was worth it.

With the private class done and dusted, Rudi gets back to his own dance company, Untimitive. Beyond creating dance videos that regularly go viral, the company was commissioned to choreograph one K-pop music video, then another, and another. Whatever may come Rudi’s way, he will be ready with his company, because they train to be.
In the dance industry, the wisdom is that you move to America to make it big. Rudi Smit has turned that idea on its head.
