ADVENTURER STRIVES TO BREAK WORLD RECORD AND ROW SOLO ACROSS THE ATLANTIC

We meet Ryan Jacobs, a war photographer with a passion for adventure, as he chats to us about his latest venture.

Covering the uprisings in Libya and Syria taught Ryan that second chances in life are very rare, and that he had to live on his own terms.

Born and raised by a hard-working single parent, the Capetonian was always encouraged to try his best in life and to follow his dreams, regardless of how big or small they might be.

His grandfather taught him how to dream however, his mother and grandmother were the ones that encouraged him to make those wild dreams become a reality.

That mindset saw him traveling across the globe in pursuit of his dreams and adventures.

From covering conflicts as a photojournalist, to climbing El Capitan in Yosemite and living as a dirtbag, Ryan has spent the last decade of his life chasing new adventures.

Ryan has achieved every goal he has set out for himself but he believes that his journey is not finished yet.

He wants to see just how far he can go and at the same time, how he can change the narrative of diversity and representation in the areas of adventure and exploration.

So what is his next adventure? This year, Ryan plans on becoming the first African person of colour to row solo across the Atlantic.

He plans to row across the Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean at the end of this year, covering approximately 5300 Nautical Miles (NM).

If he is able to do so, he will break the World Record for the furthest distance rowed solo across the Atlantic, which currently sits at 5030 NM.

His immediate challenge however, is raising funds for his craft to be built here in Cape Town.

And while doing so, turning Ryan’s physique and metabolism into an extreme endurance machine has become Atlantic Fitness’s Grant Hartzenburg’s challenge.

Atlantic Fitness truly believes that there is no cookie cut approach to fitness, which is evident in Grant’s workout plan for Ryan.

All their trainers offer functional training that is personalised to suit every client’s individual fitness goals.

Regardless of where the tide might take him, we are excited to see the next chapter in Ryan’s magnificent journey.
