OPEN UP TO NEW BEGINNINGS WITH WORLD JUNIOR POLE-VAULT CHAMPION MIRÉ REINSTORF

Meet World Junior pole-vault champion Miré Reinstorf who’s set her sights on gold at the Commonwealth Games.

When it comes to having the courage to try something new – may we never forget the story of high school gymnast and athlete Mirè Reinstorf who decided to try her hand at pole vaulting, and then went on to take gold at the World Junior Championships when she cleared 4.15m in her first attempt in the women’s final.

It was an unforgettable jump for both the BCom Actuarial Science student and South Africa as her win also broke the African women’s under twenty record of Tunisian Syrine Balti, which has stood since 2002.

We seized the opportunity to catch a change of scenery with Mirè and her local support system, which includes coach Jean-Paul van As and friend Rhodè Ferreira, and took an adventurous scooter ride through Stellenbosch farmland with Vinebikes.

Q&A WITH MIRE

What does ‘living better’ mean to you?

I associate ‘living better’ with having a well balanced routine. Waking up early, eating healthy, exercising, sleeping enough, catching up with friends and family, setting reachable goals and striving towards them, and just being happy and content with yourself and what you are achieving.

What 2 valuable lessons would you like to share with South Africa?

Whatever you do, you have to do it because you want to and because you enjoy it. And, anything is possible with hard work and the power from God.

Where do you go to escape and connect with yourself?

I love reading and listening to music. Whenever I just want to escape for a bit, I read a good book or take a walk and listen to some music.

Do you have an encouraging quote to end off on?

Work hard for the things that you want because nothing comes by itself. And don’t lose hope if you have a bad day because after a bad day there will always come better days!
