LUXURY INTERIOR DESIGNER, FAZLIN HOOSAIN BRINGS THE MIDDLE EAST TO SA WITH HER LATEST PROJECT

Recreating furniture, art and spaces is Fazlin Hoosain’s forte. She gives us a tour of her latest handiwork.

She was named a Design Indaba Emerging Creative for a reason. Prior to the upheaval of lockdown, the talented Ms Hoosain began designing a furniture collection and line of art that  repurposed discarded pieces of marble. Since then she has started her own interior design studio, Collectic and has now stepped into her incredible gift of luxury interior design.

We got a full tour of her latest project. Each room is the perfect marriage of middle eastern flair and South African flavour. The client wanted a light, airy, modern and contemporary redesign with a strong homage to Islam.

Fazlin shared, “What I love about recreating spaces is looking at a space in its bare and naked form, and then adding so much interest and layer and basically creating a personality for this space.”

Fazlin loves to paint with light in her use of the sun, candles, recessed lighting and fixtures as more artistic, sculptural pieces. The whole house is a canvas mixing wood and terrazzo from the floor onto the staircase and walls. She used height to dramatically frame what might otherwise be just a passage – while understanding what anchors each area.

Fazlin explained her reason for choosing the colour palette she did and shared a priceless tip: “We chose a beautiful neutral background and what that allows the client to do at a later stage is easily change up the colour palette without having to change any of the big furniture pieces.”

Every corner of the home proves that neutral doesn’t mean without character. Fazlin managed to bring charisma to the house in the subtlest ways. From gorgeous Arabic architectural artwork to the feature wall fireplace, LED lighting on the stairs and brightly coloured accessories.

The next step for this talented designer of signature luxury is getting commissions from abroad and it’s only a matter of time.
