JULIET EIDELMAN CERAMICS: UNCOMPLICATED HANDMADE VESSELS WITH LOVE

Discover the beautiful bespoke handmade works of a Mother City-based contemporary ceramicist.

Juliet Eidelman is an architect by profession who began ceramics as a hobby while still at school. She kept her second passion alive through the years and in 2015 opened her own studio in Woodstock Cape Town.

“I love clay, and I love working with my hands. There’s a sculptural element to it which I really enjoy,” shares Juliet.

She adds, “I think part of architecture is similar to having structures and working out how things get made. I enjoy the shapes, forms and feeling of clay as well as the texture of clay,” says the ceramicist and architect.

Making her pieces by hand, Juliet has a love for the beauty that comes from the uniqueness of each design so the focus is on texture, simplicity and raw, unglazed clay in her work.

“I do a lot of decor pieces and a lot of bespoke pieces, so I don’t do the same thing over and over again. You’ll see a lot of my work is raw clay.  I enjoy expressing the clay itself… the colour of the clay and very simple forms.”

As the old adage goes, love what you do and you’ll never work a day in your life. Whether it’s architecture or ceramics, Juliet Eidleman is using her creativity to create beauty in the world which in turn feeds her soul.
