THE DIGNIFIED SIMPLICITY OF TINY HOME LIVING

We meet Wanderlust Co. co owners and take a look at the tiny living, the compact, environmentally friendly, and cost effective alternative to traditional housing.

We stepped inside the ultra modern and functional tiny home of Wanderlust Co. co-owners Kendal and Matt Bower, on the Dolphin Coast, KwaZulu-Natal and were pleasantly surprised by the compact and chic space with all the amenities and family needs.

Tiny home living is a growing trend in parts of the US, that essentially promotes living simply in smaller-than-average homes. The minimalist lifestyle is one of the big driving forces behind the movement. Other motivators include the typically smaller price tag of one, lower household expenses, mobility, and their reduced impact on the environment..

Kendal shares the couple’s inspiration for giving up traditional living for their 8 x 2.2m abode.

What does ‘living better’ mean to you? / How are you aspiring to live better?

“Living better to us means living simpler, getting rid of unnecessary clutter in our lives and focusing on what truly means the most to us. We have recently come across a saying which we feel encompasses the values of Tiny Home Living and that is “Dignified Simplicity”.

One of our main goals when moving tiny was to be able to live our lives more freely and in particular enjoy the outdoors more as well as being able to travel our beautiful country.”

What legacy would you like to leave behind?

“More than just a legacy, at Wanderlust Co we are striving to create an industry where one had previously not existed. Our goal is to be able to prove the livability of Tiny Homes and change the mindsets of so many South Africans who believe that a big home is a symbol of success.”…

“No matter what your financial situation is, Tiny Home living can be suitable for everyone!”

What lesson or advice would you like to share with South Africa?

“Step out of your comfort zone and try something new, whether that be a new way of living, a new holiday destination or even just a new restaurant. We don’t expect anyone to make the decision to move tiny overnight, even though we did it! Allow it to be a slow transition and you will be surprised how easy it is to adapt to.”

“The most valuable lesson we can walk away from this experience with is that we did not allow fear to stand in the way of our dreams. People are all too often scared or resistant of change when in fact we should be embracing change!”

Where do you go to escape and connect with yourself?

“As a couple we thoroughly enjoy going to the game reserve for a break in the bush taking in all that South Africa has to offer.”

“Matt’s weekend pleasure is taking his boat out deep sea fishing. That’s where he gets to recharge his batteries and prepare himself for the next week or weeks to come!”

Do you have an encouraging quote, to end off on?

“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication – Leonardo Da Vinci”
