CONRAD HICKS: ONE OF SA'S LEADING ART BLACKSMITHS

Blacksmith and sculptor Conrad Hicks wrestles fire, steel and copper to his creative force of will.

Conrad Hicks is one of South Africa’s leading art blacksmiths whose greatness is tempered in his humility and passion for molding copper and steel.

This master of metal sees his work as part of a continuous line of human tool-making and the artistic expression which came from it, dating back to the Stone Age, two and half million years ago.

‘I’m very interested in primitive blacksmithing, African iron work and bronze age stuff. The transition from stone to bronze, and then bronze to iron results in a beautiful relationship between the forms that’s kind of very, very sculptural. We recognise that language as being the rules that we have for beauty,” shares the artist.

Conrad reveals that he finds blacksmithing and toolmaking is a very deep, human, intuitive practice. Never worried about the next stage, Conrad trusts the work to keep creating more and ever evolving lines of art for him. Even greater things lie in store.

You can find Conrad’s latest works at Southern Guild in the V&A Waterfront until 20 February 2022, where his solo exhibition explores the expressive potential of copper in his sculpture series titled Cu.

He also has culinary works displayed throughout restaurateur Peter Tempelhoff’s African and Japanese-inspired FYN-dining establishment in Cape Town City Centre that boasts incredible views and cuisine fit for an award winning restaurant.
