MANDELA SANCTUARY HOTEL: THE FORMER HOME OF NELSON MANDELA

Visit Nelson Mandela’s former home in Houghton which has been turned into a hotel to honour his legacy.

Mandela Sanctuary Hotel is set in Nelson Mandela’s primary place of residence in the leafy-green suburb of Houghton, Johannesburg. This is the home Madiba lived in after he achieved freedom – where he hosted the likes of Michelle Obama and Bill Clinton which later became the headquarters of the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

Sanctuary Mandela is now the re-envisioned residency, a one-of-a-kind boutique hotel with 9 curated rooms with interiors by Kim H Interior Design. The offers retreat spaces for reflection, healing and thought-provoking experiences inspired by Madiba’s life.

Other onsite facilities include meeting rooms, a swimming pool, a restaurant, and a bar. The restaurant remembers Tata Madiba’s favourite dishes. For the father of our nation, food was more than sustenance. It was about tradition and spending time with family and friends. Michelle Obama and Bill Clinton were just two of the people he hosted here.
