CAPITEC PARTNERS WITH MUSIC STREAMING SERVICE, JOOX

Afrocentric music streaming service, JOOX has teamed up with South Africa’s largest digital bank, Capitec, to provide its clients with a Live Better benefit of 30% off the apps monthly subscription fee. Whether you need inspiration, just want to get down to some beats or experience the thrill of a live-streamed concert, the Capitec JOOX Live Better benefit offers access to all the music you need!

The way we consume music has changed vastly since the days of records, cassettes and CDs. Today you can access all of your favourite artists directly from your phone. JOOX is a music streaming platform with a strong focus on local artists, offering uniquely South African content. The Insider SA caught up with Brett Loubser, the CEO of Tencent Africa, the company behind the platform.

Brett gave us a sneak-peek into the workings of JOOX. “We’ve set up a very strong, local team and have a very deep insight into what the local music community needs and wants”. JOOX, it seems, is on its way to becoming the de facto music streaming platform used on the African continent.

Recently, JOOX partnered with Capitec, one of South Africa’s most popular banks that Brett recognises as an inspiration to his own company and describes as “a bank that drives innovation forward and puts their customer first”. With a similar vision and energy in their businesses, JOOX and Capitec have teamed up to support both local artists and their fans with Capitec’s Live Better benefits.

“Our partnership with Capitec allows their clients to actually get a 30% discount on their normal monthly subscription for JOOX”, explains Brett. “All a Capitec client has to do is use their Capitec card to pay for the JOOX service and they’ll get a full month of music streaming for R41,99”.

Along with unlimited music streaming, Capitec clients also have access to JOOX’s heaps-of-fun karaoke feature that allows users to partake in their very own rockstar moment. “The karaoke feature allows you to sing different songs and record yourself, and then upload the video”, explains Brett. This way, you can connect with a community of like-minded fans, as well as the musicians who created the song.

Capitec clients are also in for a treat every Wednesday night. Since the start of lockdown, JOOX has launched Gig2Earn, a platform for upcoming artists to perform live to all JOOX users via the app.

Music artists have taken a huge knock during the global pandemic, and to help ease the blow, JOOX’s Gig2Earn has given them an opportunity to earn a living again. “We know that artists rely on live performances to a large degree for their revenue stream, especially the smaller artists whose livelihoods just evaporated”, Brett explains.

One such rising star is Nonzwakazi Kamashimane, a talented vocalist from Durban who recently launched her solo career. Nonzwakazi has a background in choral music, classical music, and opera. This foundation gave her the versality and talent to win AfriMusic Song Contest in 2019, the biggest music competition in Africa.

Nonzwakazi would describe herself as “An artist who goes for all opportunities”. That’s why she immediately signed up to perform on JOOX’s Gig2Earn programme. “It’s amazing, you get to connect with your fans in a different way”, Nonzwakazi shares. “But, at the same time, the Gig2Earn project has really helped us and I’m so appreciative because it has helped, not only me, but so many artists”.

Through her success on the platform, Nonzwakazi was also given the opportunity to open for singer-songwriter Jeremy Loops on Big Live, another new campaign started by JOOX.

Brett explains, “We initiated Big Live during lockdown because we knew that live concerts were also going to go away and so we’ve tried to replicate the concert experience as closely as possible for an artist and for the fans. Every couple of Sunday nights, we have a big A-List artist and a live broadcast. The audience can interact with each other and send comments to the artist while they’re watching”.

JOOX’s Big Live has given SA artists a taste of the future of music – an exciting new horizon. “The fact that there are organisations like JOOX that are putting these sorts of things on, making spaces available in these very uncertain times is a good thing”, Jeremy shares. “I think the artists appreciate it and I’m here for it!”

To share in the spirit of connection, community, and of course music, one of JOOX’s Big Live guests, Master KJ, the artist behind the viral track and trend, Jerusalema, challenged JOOX and Capitec to a Jerusalema Jive. Keith Lennox, Divisional Executive for Business Solutions, comments that “JOOX is the right music streaming partner for Capitec and we like the fact that local music is given prominence in their vast catalogue. They have a strong focus on promoting and supporting local talent, which aligns with the principles that underpin Live Better. The JOOX team’s enthusiasm and professionalism has been a pleasure to work with”.

JOOX and Capitec are inviting you to dance along with them through Capitec’s Live Better benefit. Exclusive to Capitec clients, save 30% on a monthly JOOX VIP subscription (usually R59,99 per month, now R41,99) when you sign up and pay on joox.com using your Capitec debit or credit card.
