SABC 2’S THE TASTE MASTER JUDGE, FRITZ SCHOON, EATS WITH PURPOSE

Meet Stellenbosch’s dynamic culinary duo Fritz and Chanelle Schoon who are fast baking and cooking their way into South Africa’s hearts.

Fritz Schoon studied for a career in the building industry but soon found that the spice of life lay in food, so the baker, entrepreneur and visionary took a leap of faith and made the switch to studying baking. Following a two year long apprenticeship in Knysna, he then moved to Stellenbosch where he opened his first bakery.

The vision of providing honest, real food and connecting a network of local artisans and farmers has developed into the SCHOON brand, owned by Fritz and wife Chanelle Schoon.

“The backbone of the SCHOON concept is bread. Bread throughout history has been this communal act of enjoying food together, breaking bread together, making peace, building relationships and so the SCHOON concept is really putting that act forward. Schoon means clean; clean eating, clean living.” shares Fritz.

The purpose-driven brand strives to continually evolve. It now boasts seven eateries plus the SCHOON Manufactory, which includes a small café, experimental kitchen, bakery and patisserie – the place to brainstorm and create.

“Naturally farmed wheat milled, whole with stone, maintaining the integrity of the grain that is transferred into a naturally fermented dough, baked off quickly, and maintaining moisture making it one of the most nutrient dense foods on the planet. That’s what we’re bringing back to South Africa, putting real bread back onto the table,” explains the baker who this year made his reality TV debut as one of the judges on SABC 2’s The Taste Master. He hosts the show together with celebrity chef and author Zola Nene.

“I was so proud of seeing Fritz on TV because I know, being his wife, that it’s not his comfort zone. I think he’s done a fantastic job, but I also think he has a great co-presenter that has really helped him along. I think it’s really a team effort with something like that and that you’ve got to have some sort of spark between the two of you, and Zola and Fritz definitely had that,” comments Chanelle.

Baking more memories is the soul of season 2 of The Taste Master SA, brought to you by Royal Baking Powder, and it’s certainly the way of life for Fritz and his restaurants.

Catch Fritz on the final episode of The Taste Master SA: The Baking Edition this Friday 3 December at 7PM on SABC2 and see who steps away with this year’s ultimate prize.
