Sbonelo Khwela is an athlete who has shown excellence in a sport, where even just competing is reserved for the fittest among us. This family man, with aspirations of creating opportunities for others in his community, is viewed by many as a leader.

The paddler from the Valley of a Thousand Hills has won multiple awards, including the doubles K2 title in the Dusi with Andy Birkett in 2014. In fact, he’s risen from out of Martin Dreyer’s ‘Change a Life’ academy to being one of the top four marathon paddlers in SA

A major life goal for him is to be the first black K1 Dusi Canoe Marathon winner or be part of an all-black K2 winning team. Something he came incredibly close to in 2020 when he placed second with Thulani Mbanjwa – an achievement he proudly refers to as a win by ‘black legends.’
