Reinvent winter by skiing over the mountains in the not too far Maluti Mountains.

With a five hour drive from Joburg, you can almost escape the cold, or, the same distance can see you embrace the season, at the snowy playground in the Maluti mountains.

The latter is exactly what Palesa Qhalane, the adventurous soul and proud Business Process Engineer at Capitec, opted to do as she stepped out to Live Better by reimagining her Winter while showcasing how fellow South Africans can do the same.

Palesa describes herself as a loud introvert. She thoroughly enjoys the outdoors and regularly horse rides, golfs and dines out. This time around she wanted to try something fresh, and what could be better than hitting the powdery white slopes of the majestic mountain system on the border of South Africa and Lesotho.

There, Afriski’s 365-day mountain resort offers a host of activities throughout the year, including their wildly popular winter activities for all levels, from snow-skiing, snowboarding, tubing and even bum boarding. It’s the place you go to squeeze every bit of adventure from their visit to the landlocked country.

It is to enable everyday South Africans experiences like these that Capitec’s Live Better rewards programme sets out to see you ‘get’ paid rather than ‘pay’ for banking.

One of my absolute favourite things about Live Better is that I get physical cash back so I don’t have to figure out how to use rewards, points or anything like that. I know I’m guaranteed money back into my account on the 10th of every month,” explains Palesa.

She shares her tips on how she makes her rewards work for her.

I maximise my Live Better cashback by having all my Interest Sweep’s deposited into my Capitec Live Better account. I have the Round-Up set to the maximum amount so that everytime I transact it rounds it up to R10 and then that money goes into my Live Better account. I use only my cards to transact, specifically my credit card because it has a higher percentage back on the Live Better cash back. Lastly, I shop at Live Better partners.”

She adds, “On the 10th of every month, all of your cashback benefits are then paid into your Live Better account. This will earn interest that is actually higher than your savings account so you can decide to leave the money in the account or you can use it on experiences and living your best life.”

Ticking off that bucket list experience in Lesotho, is but a short road trip that would otherwise cost return flights to Europe along with a major outlay for visas and accommodation in Euros.

I am amazed at how beautiful Lesotho is in general. It encapsulates the beauty of Africa as a continent. The views, the scenery, the people, it’s just great! Love it!”

On hand to get Palesa, was ski instructor Shayne Murray. While nervous at first she took it on like a champ and was quickly confident enough to shimmy through the snow. There were a couple of falls and slips but she managed to get the hang of it.

Skiing has been a bucket list item of mine. I think it’s about pushing boundaries and putting yourself out there even if it makes you uncomfortable. I fell a couple of times, but it’s fun and an experience that I will always hold in my heart,” shares the champ.

The opportunity to discover the distinct cultural identity and landscape that Lesotho has to offer, from the snow capped mountains in winter, unique activities and life after dark – is right here on our doorstep and ready for you to explore. We highly encourage you to put it on your bucket list.
