MEET VAN LIFE NOMADS ALAN, DEE AND WINSTON THE KOMBI

Travel back in time with auto enthusiasts Alan Paterson and Dee Gregory, and their 70s Kombi named Winston.

Living in the moment is so much easier when you decide to let infinite moments come to you. For vintage auto and travel enthusiasts Dee Gregory and Alan Paterson the way to do that is road tripping the nation in their retro seventies kombi camper van.

The Kombi has affectionately been dubbed Winston, and was purchased in 2015 with the goal of “chasing lighthouses around the country”. It has since had a rebuild and is now their penthouse hotel suite on wheels with a three hundred and sixty degree view.

In addition to getting the full tour of the interior, we had the pleasure of exploring Mossel Bay with the trio before settling in to fire a couple of questions at Alan.

Q&A WITH ALAN

What does ‘living better’ mean to you? / How are you aspiring to live better?

Being gentle with the environment. Don’t waste water, recycle waste, plastics, etc. We strive to do our best with all of the above.

What two pieces of advice would you like to share with South Africa?

Treat people how you would like to be treated, and look locally for amazing beauty as the grass isn’t greener on the other side.

Where do you go to escape and connect with yourself?

We try to get out as much as possible. Dee’s photography gets her out and about into the country and through this, she gets to meet very interesting people.

Do you have an encouraging quote for us?

Try to live your life to the fullest, you only get one chance at it.

Are there any last thoughts you’d like to add?

We loved Cardova videographer Mfundo’s companionship and his creativity, and especially his patience. We really enjoyed Mossel Bay, a jewel of the Garden Route with some awesome people and places. Definitely a return-trip or two on the cards – Got to get the Zip-line done!
